Over the past few weeks, I've been getting a variety of items at the local supermarket, Kasumi. Since it's been a while since I've added anything to the convenience store category, I thought I would talk about a few items worth talking about. On the list is melon, yakitori, tare dango, and a cake!
The first one was a lone melon that was 980円. While it doesn't look quite the best, the melon was so sweet and juicy, it puts the melons I've had in the states to shame. It, unfortunately, is only the second best melon I've had. The level of sweetness and juiciness of this melon is only second to a Japanese boxed-melon (箱メロン) I had in 2015 when I studied abroad in Kobe. Man, fruit in Japan is so good.
The second item I wanted to monologue about was a yakitori stall that sets up shop outside Kasumi on the weekend. Everytime I bike near there, you can smell the smoke from the grilled chicken for dozens of meters. So far, I've tried their chicken skin (皮), white offal (白モツ), green onion with chicken (ねぎま), and chicken thigh (もも), all with tare (タレ). Honestly, I think I really love this shoyu-mirin concoction so much but the additional flavor it imparts as it drips down the hot grill is un-resistible. I need to make sure I don't spend too much on this luxury...
The next item was this tare dango (たれだんご). I've seen dango in anime and other media for quite some time but I think I've never had the chance to try it. Needing a nice snack, I thought now is a good time as any to experience it. It was quite interesting to have rice flour based treat (almost mochi-like) in such a savory way. I've already gotten it again for breakfast tomorrow!
Finally, I was in the mood for some cake (and maybe an occasion) so I got this cheese-cake like thing at the store. Unfortunately, this was the most underwhelming thing I've gotten on this list. The texture was still quite nice since it was a light airy cake but sort of disappointing when I was expecting cheesecake. Alas...
