I'm just looking for an excuse to vent so rather than take a bunch of pictures of onigiri, sushi rolls, croquettes, steamed buns, musubis, salads, and so much more, I felt like this ends up being fairly representative. In the states, I would imagine a quite little dessert like this would be ~$5 at a fancy cafe (or a Disney store, god willing). However, at nearest 7-11, there are these cute bay max vanilla/chocolate little treat for less than $4 just chilling nonchalantly. And the reason it's so nonchalant is this is the standard many of the other items are held to. The onigiri have at least 5 different varieties (ranging from stewed bonito [おかか] or salmon [鮭] to tuna mayo. The croquettes are made daily and are kept in a warmer with little moisture so the first bite still has a bit of crunch. There are actually greens and somewhat healthy meals one can eat for lunch!? I just don't know why in the states (sans Hawai`i), we settle for less than mediocre convenience stores, especially in college towns. Bah humbug
