Alright, maybe from the Nagoya series you've heard me complain about drinking too much. While I definitely had stuff to drink during the collaboration meeting, the too much drinking comment actually came from the weekend after, where a colleague and I went to Osaka to look for food and enjoy some sights! For some chronoligical connection, here we are enjoying the hitsumabushi in Nagoya for lunch before taking the shinkansen to Osaka.
When we reached our hotel and recovered for a bit, we decided to explore Dotonburi and enjoy the sights. The most important items one must have while in Osaka is お好み焼き(okonomiyaki). We happen to find a very popular spot with a 3.7 on tabelog, which is unheard of in Tsukuba. So while we placed my name on the 1-1.5 hour long list, we decided to hit a ホルモン (hormone?) yakiniku place for a couple of drinks.
Of course, along with a couple of offal appetizers to have, we had to drink. Starting the night in dotonbori with a couple of sours and some yakiniku. The colleague wanted to enjoy the liver and I just wanted some of the more basic cuts. Although it isn't much to write home about, it was somewhat cheap (maybe < $5 USD?) for the meat and ~$10 USD for the drinks.
So we whet our appetite and happen to stumble out with a 5-10 minute wait remaining for okonomiyaki... Wunderbar! The place is called 伏太郎本店 (fukutaro main store), and is known for okonomiyaki (the Japanese 'pancake') and negiyaki (a green onion heavy version). For a bit of context, the colleague I was with was not the biggest of okonomiyaki (especially because she dislikes nori). Even though we forgot to remove it from the order, the colleague still tried it and here's the result.
It was good! It was comparable to the okonomiyaki I had while studying abroad in Kobe but the bottom was a bit more set and the dough was just set (the first bight was even almost raw!) so it was super moist, the taste of the dough complimented the okonomiyaki sauce/mayo/aonori/katsuobushi. The negiyaki didn't have the sauces so one could really focus on the dough and those crispy green onions. I think the iPhone photography did it a bit of justice.
And of course, we had a beer at this place to enhance the experience. :D
